Default 2005 civic 1.7 auto shift problems

The car is at 80k miles and in great condition. The other day, it randomly started having shift problems.'
I can be driving averagely and then when it is about to shift it instead revs up and smacks the redline. sometimes letting of the gas will help, but it does this constantly.
If i give it a lot of gas it may shift ok from 1st to 2nd, or it may bounce of redline again. also, sometimes if u are going somewhat slow, it may just suddenly jump to red without even pushing the gas in any farther. not to mention when it revs out of control it doesnt seem to engage the tranny because it doesnt really speed up when it does it.
Any help would be amazing. thanks for listenning.
p.s. im not certain, but the warmer the car gets the worst this seems to happen.

Is the check engine light on? Any codes?

Usually a flair between shifts is from a valve hanging up in the valve body. Once it starts to slip it causes the clutch frictions to wear and normally requires rebuilding the transmission. You can try a fluid flush but this rarely fixes the problem and even when it does it is only temporary.

Yes the check engine light is on, but we are gonna do a diagnostic check soon. Would a rebuild save a lot over just getting a new tranny? Really sucks having all this on a honda with 80k miles

You will need the codes stored in memory to diagnose the problem. If it turns out to need a transmission PM me and I will give you a price on a remanufactured unit. Honda makes a great car, unfortunately their automatic transmissions are pretty weak.

Thanks a lot for the help. Oddly enough when we went to get to get it tested the check engine light went off, and they told us they cant diagnose it unless the light was on.its been the oddest thing. It still drives great it just likes to feel like it pops into neutral at random times.
And thanks, ill pm you if it looks like we need a new tranny
