Default 98 Civic AT shifting wrong

I have a 98 Civic EX with auto trans, 81,000 mi. My trans feels like it slips from 2nd to 3rd, @3000 rpms. Doesn't slip all the time, only on occasion.
Fluid level fine, no leakage. Could this be a sensor of some kind? If it is a wear problem, why doesn't it act up each time? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Kevnad

A clutch doesn't have to slip in athe same spot all the time to be a definitive slipped clutch. I mean, it sounds pretty straight forward.

It's an automatic.

Yes, it is an automatic, fluid not burnt. I am the original owner, careful driver. This slipping is baffling because it doesn't happen every time. Is there a way to determine what the problem is without putting myself at the mercy of the dealer? How about the throttle position sensor?
I read that the TPS can make the transmission act up. Is this true?
