Default 98 honda civic ex engine problem

on my way to work friday at the stop light my car started making a loud knocking and screaching sound. i turned into the gas station and it died.
the car still starts up but has a low idle and wants to die. if you rev it at all it knocks loud and when you let go it dies. and yes, i have oil and change it regularly.

any ideas on what it could be or what its gonna cost to fix?

98 honda civic ex 1.6l sohc

I was told it could be the timing belt jumped or a valve problem.
(its been towed to a mechanic but he cant look at it for a day or 2 yet)

Thanks.

Definitely check the timing belt. Any CEL codes, such as for misfires?

Well just got the call from the mechanic. He suspects a broken piston rod. He said he left it in the shop over the weekend and all the oil was on the floor.
He quoted me 1550 for the engine and 650 to put it in. Does this sound right?

On ebay I found engines for around 500.
The cel was not on and I never checked for codes. Gas station owner wanted it gone asap

im taking it to a different mechanic. This guy has been my long time mechanic for the stuff i couldnt do for years but i've lost all trust in him. he was rude on the phone, hes dishonest (i found out my sister had a motor replaced by him and he charged her an extra 150 cuz he had to take a bracket off the old motor to put on the new one.)

as far as i know hes feeding me a line of crap about the oil on the floor to make money off of me.

you should have heard him when i told him i checked into engines and told him what i found... he was shocked and couldnt even respond.

back a few years ago he swapped an engine and tranny for 600 total, its sad how greed can change an honest person like that.

i've done motor swaps before but i just dont have the time or the tools to do it

Thanks

well i went to go get my car from that "mechanic" the oil was still full. so theres no way all the oil could have came out of the engine.

my other mechanic thinks its a timing belt.

we shall see.
