Default need advice for diagnosing a smoking problem

have a gsr in a ek hatch. its boosted at 7 lbs stock internals for the most part. on the valve cover there is a small vent filter where i believe a pcv valve goes but im not sure. recently excessive smoke has began to come out of that filter and at times as filled the inside of the car. it looks as if it is coming through the exhaust as well. i had pulled the head off to check the valves and they seem fine, but i dont want to install it back without having something done to it to solve my smoke problem. ive been told it could possibly be the rings going bad or maybe a valve seal. any comments would be a big help just trying to decide which way to turn without dumping a bunch of money into it off the bat. thanks

Complete a compression & leak down test.

More than likely it is because you are actually blowing boost pressure past the rings. First step I'd try is installing a catch can/breather. This will releive a lot of the additional crankcase pressure that is blowing oil/air through the vavle cover vent. (btw: the pcv comes out of the back of the block below the manifold on GSR engines. It mounts to the black breather box).

After that if it is still smoking/ blowing a lot of air out, hone the cylinders and replace the rings.

Why would you recommend these modifications when you have no idea if his engine has mechanical issues to begin with?

There would be absolutely no point in trying ANYTHING until a compression & leak down test were performed. For all you know he has a broken ringland which is causing blow by.

Also, generally when an engine is showing signs of blow by & actually has a ring sealing issue the solution isn't to hone & re-ring.
It is usually bore 1 size up (.25 over) and re-ring with new pistons...

It is spelled arguing not argueing :-)

I am not arguing with you, simply correcting you on the proper way to proceed with diagnosing such an issue. Read the topic, it states "need advice for diagnosing a smoking problem". It does not say "how to remedy a smoking problem".

If the OP ends up having good compression & leak down results I would then recommend trying a catch catch, however I do not believe a catch can is going to solve his issues as the amount of smoke he is describing is way more then a catch can is going to help with....
