Are you turbo or something? If you go straight pipe, it'll be loud as f*ck. Why not a Hi-Flow or at least a test pipe?

x2 on the high flow cat and resonator. IIRC most tech/safety inspections you are required to pass an exhaust inspection. It's not an emissions test. It's checking for leaks or non compliant exhaust systems. i.e. one without a cat or street legal muffler woudl probably fail. Best to find out what is going to be required of your vehicle to pass your state tech/safety inspection before you go hacking. Also check to see if your city/town/state has a noise (db) bylaw/law. Getting rid of the cat and resonator and running straight 2.5" to a muffler may be too loud.

pros- very little gain in hp. even with turbo. cons - smell, sound, attracting wrong attention(police.) .. high flow cat resonated . i have a vw that has a catless downpipe with resonated muffler and is somewhat loud but it has a turbo which helps. in a naturally aspirated car, it will be louder.

if you get rid of it, at least run a decent muffler, if it's not too loud and looks decent, they probably won't pay attention, you can always stick a round resonator in the middle, put a heatshield over it and it will look like a cat, I don't have one on the hatch but of course it's 25 years old, all the nightmare emissions system on the carb and the factory carb wasn't fixable anymore anyway. I wonder in states that have emissions for a car this old, if the repair parts are no longer made, you get an automatic waiver? Honda discontinued a lot of the feedback carb parts anyway

from experience... the worst part about removing the cat is the smell . the sound of the exhaust also gets a little more raspy. some people like that... most don't.

mine actually sounded better, i guess it's the larger engines do, the smaller honda engines have more of a tinny sound, which of course sounds ten times worse through one of those fart cans

well mine is an 86 with the A20, I can't wait to get it running so I can hear what it sounds like with these S&S headers and my new carbs and cam, plus the stainless system I'm building right now, the dual outlets on the side of the rear bumper are going to sound kick ***. The old iron block Honda engines have a very unique deep sound, something about the newer dual cam engines alters the pitch of the engine.
