Might be a bad reverse gear selecter?

Brake stopper ring, synchro, or slider are my guesses. No way to tell though without splitting the trans and inspecting.

5th and R have their own synchros. It will still go into 5th just fine as long as the hub is scratched up.

Simplest things first guys.

Does it go in at all with the engine not tuning? Also it doesn't necessarily sound like your shift linkage or mounts are the problem, which seems to be the case behind most issues on these cars. I suppose it wouldn't hurt checking those over but these are so much easier (though much less likely) that you'd be kicking yourself in the nuts if the culprit was there. Last shot in the dark would be the reverse switch binding for whatever reason. Pray it's one of those because...

Otherwise it's time to remove and open up the trans. I got money on the shift change holder assy (SCHA) or the reverse holder. I've seen this piece bend and eventually break on a few B-series transmissions. It usually fails when the drivers "rows" through the gears and put extra stress on one small component. Conversely, the reverse holder may fail when you keep trying to stuff it in there using a lot of pressure.

If for some reason it's the actual reverse idle gear, PM me your address and I'll send you one.

When the SCHA bends/cracks/breaks it causes problems in all gears.

I've never seen a reverse switch bind with the switch out (not in reverse), only with it in (in reverse) which will only cause the reverse lights to stay on but not any shifting problems.

Correct, the SCHA will, and while it seems to be more noticeable in 2-4-R than 1-3-5, the reverse component is unique to that gear only. It would be the most likely problem next to the R synchro... both of which obviously require trans removal.

OP, can you even get the car into R while the engine is off? If not, does the car move at all as you're trying to put it in reverse with the engine running? What if you go through the gears with the clutch pedal down, then try reverse?

Thanks for all the info. Today it did end up going into reverse but it ends up being very stiff. all the other gears are great. Mounts and shift linkage are good nothing broken there. Not completely sure where the reverse switch binding is. do you perhaps have a picture? i will have to look at that because the kill switch previous owner put on it is hooked up to the transmission. As quick99si said it mostly is the reverse holder due to my impatiens and rowing through gears.

Reverse switch is the only electrical connection on the trans other than the VSS.

Your reverse lights either don't work at all or stay on when its not in reverse.

funny how my old usdm tranny acted..

it refused to go into both 5th and reverse.. took tranny apart and there was only one syncro that was completely chewed up. (well, that and the gearset itself has its fair share of chipped teeth and discolored gears... the last owner probably never changed the tranny fluid.)
