Default 97 vs 00 tranny

I have a 97 civic ex 1.6 vtec. tranny codes are S40 P4A K4F A000. I found a tranny out of a 2000 civic ex with tranny codes S40 P4A E7F A000. 3rd gear is shot, and was going to rebuild. 250+ for parts to rebuild. or new tranny for $400. Will this tranny from the 2000 work?

S40 = 96-00 Civic

P4A-A000 = small bearing case = DX/HX/LX etc.
P4A-B000 = large bearing case = EX

Code should be where the axle goes into the tranny

according to what you have said NEITHER of these transmissions are ex. Yes any D series transmission 92-00 will fit if its a 5 spd. automatic is a bit different because of the ecu and the HX having a cvt transmission and a few other things.

Yeah, it'll work fine. Where were you going to get a new trans for $400?

My mistake on the 97 tranny. it is a P4A-B000

I found a few of them on Ebay for 300 plus shipping. Not sure if I should go this route

HXs use a big bearing case, not sure why, but they do.
