2500 limit. 2000 civic ex
ok so my buddy has 2500 to spend on new motor and tranny. he wants the biggest bang for his buck with the least amount of mods. what motors and trannys can we swap in there? he currently has a D16Y8. thanks guys.
You could easily get a b18b and a good transmission in there for that much.
Your post is very vague. Is the $2500 budget including mechanical work? Or are you guys savvy enough to do it yourselves?
Goals for the car? Define "Bang for the buck."
Technically if you were an aerospace machinist with a shop and materials and you found good deals on local parts you could put a k20a2 or an h22 in the car no problem.

it's a little pricey, but you can be confident you'll get a solid engine with low miles. Hmotors is the most prominent engine dealer as far as I know and they are hailed on this community. Many people have bought 4+ motors from them and I've rarely heard of a complaint that at the very least wasn't fixed. If you have a problem they'll overnight stuff to you.
