HELP: How does changing the timing supposedly give me 15-50 hp?
Hey all,
took my car in for a tune up today (ya ya I know, "do it yourself" etc, didnt have time and the guy did it for a small sack of weed- gotta love vancouver)
anyways my mechanic mentioned to me something about "changing the timing" something about "2 degrees" and he said I could gain 15-50 hp, but I'd be running on 92 octane fuel only.
can SOMEONE explain that to me please????
and why dont I hear about other people doing it? Is it harmful?
thanks!

where in vancouver do you live in ??
advancing your timming will gain you at most 2whp
and personally i dont think its worth it
what you are doing is changing the point of spark
advancing your timming will gain a little hp but it will increase engine temp and shorten engine life (stock spec is best)
and like you said you will have to run atleast 92 if not 94
its pretty simple to do it, you just need a timming light and know how to play with the dizzy
*edit* oh ya and you need a paper clip to jumper a connector while you play with the settings

pretty sure
alot of ppl do it and swear by it but its more of a mind thing more then anything
i few ppl have put it on the dyno and proven only .5-3whp
and it only works on certain cars
the new ones will recognize the advanced timing and retard itself
if your from vancouver/richmond you should check out

hope to see you at the next crx meet

heheh yeah...
**** I picked up my grampa's 91 civic 4dr... but the things an auto, and just blows goats. the good part is it only has 118,XXX km on it... awesome condition.
has some poorly done touch up paint spots on the hood and on some of the side, but aside from that it looks good.
I've been pooling my options: convert to manual? or just sell it and get an Si hatch?
I think getting the si is what I'll end up doing.

Hey some local HT members, eh?? Well, I'm gonna be selling all my parts as soon as I get them off...
Changine your timing may give you one or two hp, but run 94 octane. I ran my Y8 advanced and it made a little difference but not much.
edit:
Black CRX, I don't see how advancing the timing will shorten the life of the engine, all you're doing is changing the time at which the spark fires for a more effiecent explosion... as long as you increase the octane content, it will be perfectly fine. Just as good as stock. BTW, I think the only cars that retard timing automatically are OBD-II.

sorry to hear about your crx btw
it's a shame.

Hey, thanks for the commiseration.
I dunno, that car was always giving me problems anywas. I just got it back today. I bought it back from ICBC and took my payout as well. I'm gonna pull out the Y8 and p28 ECU and sell it, and part out the car.
Hey that new I-VTEC sounds pretty cool! And I've always known that VVT-I kicks ****... I dunno, I guess I'm just used to workin on these old school engines!

I wonder if the mechanic was refering to changing the cam timing? This would definitely get you some
extra horses, but you need adjustable cam gears and some experience.
cheers

how much are you looking to get from the motor ??
the reason i say it will shorten the life is b/c if you dont run higher octane fuel and the increased heat on the block
