Default ITR Problem

Hi guys,

I have a problem with my Type R. About a week ago I noticed a sound coming from my engine bay while I was starting the car, to me, it sounded like the brushes were going bad in the starter, so I drove like that for a few days until the sound kept getting louder and the car even hesitated to start at times. I also noticed that this sound could be heard while the car is idling if I rev it a tiny bit, it sounds like a metal to metal scraping noise.

I got a new starter, installed it, same thing happens. So I'm pretty sure I got a new starter for no reason, I never even bothered to take a look @ the old one.

It has gotten basically so bad that when I try to start the car it won't start most of the time, I hear the starter spinning but I still hear this loud weird noise that sounds like metal brushes or something scraping against something (that's the only way I can explain it).

Only other thing I can think of is something is wrong with the teeth on the flywheel or anything, what do you guys think? The car was driving normal btw. It push starts fine also.

The ring gear is spinning on the flywheel, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem lol.

As in its basically seperated. You try to turn the flywheel by sticking a screwdriver between the teeth but the only thing spenning is the teeth and nothing else.

do you have an aftermarket flywheel, or do you have a 2 piece flywheel? If you have a one piece flywheel then it sounds more like your flywheel bolts have come loose which could mean much more serious problems.

Does it keep making the sound when you press in the clutch? Can you take a short video (with sound) and put it on youtube?

The starter is off and I can't bother putting it back on now, but the sound was the ring gear spinning around on the flywheel I assume, when I pull the tranny I'll take pics and make a video of it so you can see.

An oem flywheel is ONE peice and there is no separate ring gear. With an OEM flywheel the only thing that would allow it to turn is if the flywheel bolts that hold it to the crank have backed off or sheared off.

Well I'm not sure then but take a look @ this. Notice only the teeth are spinning and towards the end everything starts spinning.

Looks like you found the sweet spot right at the end of the video.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts about if that could ever happen.

It was the ring gear.

I took it right off the flywheel.
