Default white smoke turbo d16 intermittent

well i noticed white smoke. after my oil change. it use to throw white smoke once in a while before but it went away after warmup.

weird thing is it will only blow out smoke sometimes. once i parked the car started and notice a ton of smoke i could see it from the driver seat when i put it in reverse. than i drove for a bit and checked and no more smoke. the turbo is pretty new 5k miles on it or so.

the oil is overfilled a little bit. oil pressure is steady not a change. and it runs and pulls great.

Blue smoke = Oil burn
Black smoke = Carbon build up or EGR valve (turbo apps) fu*k up
White smoke = Moisture burn

I always think from the symptoms back the way ie. how is the white smoke happening?ok so how is water getting burned through my exhaust?ok so hows it getting into the combustion cycle to be burned?etc etc, I maybe wrong but thats where I would start

have you pulled off your down pipe to see if you have any oil in it, almost sounds like your turbo seal

Have you used an engine cleanser before changing the oil?that and sum low viscosity engine oil can leak past turbo seals and burn up as the ***** toooooooo thin!

previous owner didnt tell me what type of oil he used though i put 10w30 in it non synthetic.

Ill pull the dp off and see if the seals are bad
like i said sometimes it doesnt even smoke and under wot and turbo fully spooled i see no smoke

only smokes when its warm never when cold. i started it today to check smokes like crazy when warm though

i might address i have no oil restrictor on the turbo and run 10w30 oil so maybe my turbo seals are blown out by now ran like this for a couple days now

just because there may be a bit too much oil pressure, doesn't mean you have "blown seals" in a turbocharger. could be oil backup from something especially if it doesn't do it at "cold start" when that is the time that oil pressure can be at its highest. If its feed or return check that first before blaming the turbo and removing it to get repaired. It may not need fixing.

well thats what im doing i assumed the seals were good just that the oil feed was not restrictive and too much oil going in. i think my return is fine though it sits lower than the turbo and has no bends. You know what im going to go drain the oil a bit and see what a happens maybe the oil is above or restricting the oil return line. and i though the oil pressure would be higher once warm and thinner. yeah the turbo is almost new. but could i have blown the seals without a restrict or on it. its a precision 50 trim turbo with 4an feed.

what could be wrong with the feed or return oil lines. they dont leak a drop btw.

i dont want to take the dp off quite yet because i would have to take the mani off and everything. theres no room with the 4 bolt dp
and i dont know but most people said they wont leak from the cold side

thanks for the insight though

check your oil return as well. if its gunky it could be it. I know changing mine helped. And make sure your catch is not overflowing. I run 10 30 in mine and my previous ownerdid not tell me what to run and i lose a lot because oil is to thin. But i am afraid to try thicker oil with what i read about oil clearances.
I had exact same symptoms as you. Changes return line and empty my catch and refill motor every time i drive. Hard driving will make you use even more oil.

update i just changed the oil with 10w40 and the smoking completly stopped what could it have been then now that im using thicker oil it doesnt smoke at all. it smoked a little at the turbo but i assumed it was oil from last oil and now that it burned of no more smoke hot or cold engine.

im thinking i need an oil restrictor but also leaning towards turbo seals again. maybe because thicker oil don't seep through the seals. but then again thicker oil would cause higher pressure no

I did not see in the thread where you did a compresson check I would do that.I personly would run the restrictor anyways regardless of oil thickness Im pretty sure it wont harm your motor but i would check with onther people. thats just my 2 cents

I'm doubtful as to a 10-point increase in viscosity in the hotter range(30-40)will make the difference.

ok update i just started it up after it sat for a long time and it still smoked not nearly as much, i dont get it though, it doesnt smoke at all when cool but once warm it smoked alot. then i drove it after about 10 minutes it stopped and i parked it and looked at the tail pipe and all gone.

yeah ill do a compression test soon but this is my only car and i want to wait till i have a weekend so i can tear the whole mani off and check the turbo itself and do some motor tests

I don't think the smoke is oil-related.it looks like steam coming out of your tailpipe.

smells like oil though compression numbers are good
and its not faint its clear and a hefty amount of smoke
