Front Brakes Honda 2004 CRV
I am in the process of trying to change the brakes and rotors. First I was stuck with the retaining screw - got past that. Next, the rotor wouldnt budge. I got the screws to help break it off the hub. The rotor doesnt want to come off still. It looks like maybe the spindle nut has to come off. Is this true ? Do I need to remove this ? I put everything back for now. I believe its a 24mm socket that I need. I have read some posts regarding how tough this can be to remove. Will I need special tools ? Before this is removed, the notch in it has to be 'undone'. What is the best way to do this ? Does this nut need to be replaced with a new one ? Does it have to be put back with a torque wrench ? Thanks for any advise. I am trying this myself for the first time.
So now I understand why you always need new rotors. The old ones cant come off to resurface. I may end up having someone do this. I can grab the rotor and pull it forward about 3/4 in. It gets to the point where it is just beginning to clear the center 'ring'. Then it stops. I put a piece of wood on the back of it and whacked it a little with a 5lb sledge and it doesnt seem to want to go any further. I suppose Im not equipped to handle any issues that may come up. I can do only so much in my drive way with a limited set of tools.
Break it off in multiple pieces. Thats stubborn. Im guessing the new one goes on much easier than taking the old one off.
Thanks for the info

Honda actually resurfaces rotors right on the vehicle. Its really not worth doing though, once you start taking material off the rotor they get thinner and warp easier. Sometimes they are very hard to get off, sometimes they hardly take any effort. Clean up the hub before you put the new ones on and put some neverseize on the center hole in the rotor to prevent it from seizing the next time.
Also you can see this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4YBL-A7Uow
This why I attempted to do this in the first place. I have seen this video and it is very helpful. It just isnt happening that way for me. I am going to mess with it some more before I give up and take it to a real mechanic that is more equipped to handle 'sticky' situations.
Forgot to ask this earlier, but front or rear brakes? Rear discs are a pain in the *** on CR-Vs, Odysseys, pilots and whatever else is setup with drum parking brake. The parking brake shoes grab inside the rotor. Its not fun, normally you will also distort the backing plate and it will rub on the back of the new rotor making a scraping sound, make sure you test fit the new rotor and using a hammer and punch adjust the backing plate so it doesn't touch the rotor.
