Civic '96 Dash Lights don't work, but parking Lights work
Hello, can someone help me? Here's what happened:
I somehow shorted a bulb (located below the center dash console). This bulb is connected with the cigarette lighter socket.
Now, when I set my combination light switch to "parking" and "headlights", my dash lights don't work anymore! But, the parking and taillights would still function. Normally, my dashlights would turn-on together with the parking and taillights when I switch to "parking" or "headlights".
But, when I open the door, the dashlights would function! It would still normally blink on and off. I tried fuse 30, but its not blown up. All indicator lights still function.
Somehow, the combination light switch only failed to light the dashlights.
Please help. Thanks!!!!

The combi.light switch can still turn-on the headlights, hi and low beam, turn-right and left.- and the corresponding indicator lights in the gauge panel would still light-up.
Problem is only with the gauge lights, I can't turn it on using the light switch.
So when I drive at night, there is definitely no lights on my dash.

Do the lights in the heater control panel still work? Can they be dimmed by the dimmer switch?
Pry the dimmer switch out of the dash. Is the connector loose? If not, unplug the dimmer switch and short the red wire to the black wire in the connector. Then turn the parking lights on. Do the dash lights now work?

Yes, the lights in the climate/heater control panel work. They turn-on when I switch to "parking" or "headlights". The "hazard" and "defogger" buttons also work.
Dimmer switch no longer works, it is already unplugged. I guess the red and black are shorted already.
The dash lights only light-up when I open the door. It blinks on and off normally for about 10 seconds..

There's a loose connection. Check the Red and Red/Blk wires at the rear of the cluster. Also check the corresponding terminals in the cluster connectors.
Thanks Ron, I checked the connectors, all are fit and none are loose.
Please correct if if I'm wrong, the Integrated Control Unit controls the blinking on/off of the dashlights when a door is open. So there should be nothing wrong with my ICU since it is still functioning good. Am I Right? ;-)
As for my dashlights, does the combi.light switch and ICU use different wires to turn it on? Do they have separate fuses along the way?

The ceiling light is controlled by the door switch and the integrated control unit and protected by hood fuse 43. The cluster and heater control panel lights are on a completely separate circuit protected by fuse 30. When the door is opened and the cluster lights flicker, do the heater control panel lights do the same?

If the ceiling light also flickers, the flickering may be caused by a loose G401/G402 ground connection, which is shared by both the cluster lights and integrated control unit. However, a bad ground cannot explain the reason that the cluster lights don't work while the heater control panel lights do because both share the same ground. I still think the cluster lights problem is in the cluster or cluster wires.
