***Need MAJOR help on GFs civic. Car is going crazy
Its an 05 Honda civic base mode auto. As of last night the speedometer started reading at 40mph on an idle. When she was going 60mph the speedo read 100mph an so on. Now the needle is pinned at 120mph. Everything else seems to be working fine as far as temp/gas readings. No OBD codes thrown.
She took it to Honda this morning and they told her that there was a shortage in the gauge cluster. They are asking for around $960 for parts and labor
Obviously I'm not trying to have her go that route since we have to pay for classes soon besides its something that I can do myself.
I know the cluster gets all its info from the PCM besides the mileage that stays stored in the cluster, correct? So I will inevitably have to get it calibrated at some point to have the correct mileage but thats not my problem
I have been on ebay looking for gauges and found quite a bit of OEM 05 civic gauges. Now, I know what hers looks like. Reference: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-...Q5fAccessories
Im just curious if I can opt for a better OEM one and plug and play?

Should I worry about her car being a base model and possibly buying one with a tach and that particular gauge be dead? Not pre-wired
Thanks for your time fellas

the one in the first link would work plug n play..if you opt and get the one with the tach you would have to re-pin the plugs and there's a diy in the faq about it
Second link doesn't work anymore.
As noted, unless you want to re-pin the cluster to include the tachometer, you're better off buying a direct replacement piece.
Correct, the mileage is stored in the cluster. It will cost a few pennies (slight understatement) to have the mileage reset. If you wanted to save the money, just write down the current mileage of the vehicle and split the difference with the new cluster. Keep the note in the glovebox.

^Thanks. Could I get a newer cluster without the tach and plug n play? I rather not re-pin just figured I'd update my gals cluster to something more appealing

I see.
I'm confused. Hers is a 2005 base civic auto 4dr. No pwr locks, windows, etc. Her gauges look like so http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-...Q5fAccessories
You're telling me that she has 01-02 gauges? If so, that is why I was implying upgrading to "newer" gauges. My main concern is will the "newer" non tach clusters fit and is it plug and play?
Sorry for the confusion. I'm more familiar with Nissan
2005 was the last year they made this model, there are no newer versions. 2003-2005 has LEDs and chrome rings around the gauges. Notice in your first link there are no chrome rings. That one is for a 2001-2002. Go to http://www.car-part.com/ and get a 2003-2005. It will ask you for specifics: year, door number, trans, side SRS. Shipping should be about $20. I ordered mine off of one of the salvage yards on there about a month ago and it works fine. Good luck.

ok to clear it up the cluster without a tach was in all the value package civic so you can plug and play that on in the first link and there is no newer cluster without a tach. If she wants a tach you would have to get her a 01-02 cluster that would plug n play but if you get a 03-05 cluster you would have to re-pin the plug and there is a diy for that as i say before
According to Honda literature, the 2001 - 2005 Civic DX clusters are the same, which is the one you're after.
The "fancier" looking clusters with the chrome rings and whatnot are 03-05 Visteon Type clusters, which you do not want.

The link he was referring to is in the FAQs
However, the picture you posted is of a Visteon Type cluster with a tachometer.
Honestly, you'd be better off just replacing the cluster with one similar to what is already in the car. Plug and play, call it a day.

I got the cluster. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a DIY to remove the dash? I can't locate the DIY subf-forum and I'm trying to get this done tomorrow
It's at the top of the page, never goes anywhere.

Look under the "interior" banner.
Update* I followed these simple steps to swap the cluster.
STEP 1
remove plastic from around the cluster.
there are two screws on the top remove them and it should come out with little force. it helps may to take the top cover off of your steering Colum. to do that take screw driver or your hand and push up on it. it will release from its tabs. be careful not to break the tabs.
STEP 2
remove cluster
there are three screws holding it in. one on top and two on each side on the bottom. remove them and the cluster is ready to come out. then pull the two plugs from it. a green one and a blue one.
Done in 10-15 min. Thanks guys. Been very helpful!
