Default Ring End Gap to big!!! WTF!?!?

I have GSR block with built bottom end factory cylinder bore of 81mm. I decided to refresh the block with and fresh hone, new rings and bearings. I just recieved the 81mm wiseco piston rings. I was going to start filing the ring end gap to spec. So I measured the rings first to get a starting point to see what the gap was. I measured top ring first and then the 2nd ring. The top one was .0015 which is fine because I needed to file them to .0019.

But when I checked the 2nd ring it was already at .0027!!!! I didn't even start to file the ring end gap and its way to big. I needed them to be less than .0021 for my setup.

WTF is going on! Did they send me the wrong rings? The bag they came in says 81mm.

What do I do???

Call their customer support, they should definitely be able to help, only thing I can think of if it was not a packaging error is you filed the same ring twice by accident.

I'm not sure if you read my post right. But I never touched the rings I never filed them. I only put them in the cylinder to see where the gap was out the bag.

In that case I would definitely call their support, could have been a simple mispackaging.

I ran into this problem before with similar ring end specs and a very well respected builder told me not to lose any sleep with a second ring being opened up that much. He claimed the second ring functions more as an oil scraper than for sealing combustion. I trusted him and went with and the motor ran great. No smoking and the leakdown came back good.

what hybrid KJ said.. ring gap doesnt have to be exact to work good, the hone and type of ring make more of a difference than the actual gap

I wouldnt worry about the 2nd ring being 27, just as long as its at least as big as the top ring gap you're fine.

Thanks for your help everyone!

I called a reputable engine builder here in Orlando and he told me i will be alright since I am turbocharged and that the first ring is what needs to be right, the 2nd ring will be fine at .0027 since it is just an oil scraper
