Legal Ramifications To Building Engines
This Is My First Build.
Before I Start Acuiring Anything, i Wanna Know If There Are Any Laws That Probit Me From Making An Engine Then Puting It In My 91 DA LS
My eye's on the B16B

I Live In California.
Im Asking Because When It Comes Time To Register The Car I Have To Get It Smogged. & When I Go Get It Smogged & See That I Have A Different Engine In It I Dnt Want Them To Say Somethings Wrong. I Know When You Swap An Engine You Gave To Get It Bar'd, what Are The Qualifications Of That If ANy Of You Guys Know.

there are a few threads in which people who have done a series of modifications have had to deal with the smog man in various ways. TAKE CAUTION, READ THE CALIFORNIA LAWS AS TO WHAT YOU CAN AND CAN'T DO in the state. Be prepared to get hosed if you don't have the resources to "get around it". That means you shouldn't attempt to avoid it, or be prepared to go back to stock. Getting smogged isn't as much of a problem as getting pulled over and your hood "popped" to see if you have anything illegal. Some cops know a LOT , others don't, but will give you a ticket just in case they were right or wrong. there's no talking them out of it. So be prepared for possible tickets, "gross polluter" status, and possibly go back to STOCK every time you register. YOU ASSUME THE RISK.
A lot also depends upon how "aggressive" you make your build. If a lot of it is internal, and with a good tune, you could get away with a lot of cops, but may fail smog.
This is a lot of why the scene has started to go down in CA. People can afford the cost of modification of the car, but not the fines, tickets, and hassle of maintaining a modified car on the streets like a lot of the rest of the country. If you don't have the appropriate C.A.R.B. labels and plaques, you could easily be FUBAR'D.
Start looking at people who have had issues based upon the facts and circumstances of their situation, and see if they match what you're trying to do for the purpose you're building this car for. Check with the state of california emissions and SMOG guidelines and keep a copy of them with you in the car in case you get pulled over so you can argue your reasoning (Only quickly) if you get your hood popped and need to explain your modifications. Its a bit of work, but you save THOUSANDS if you THINK BEFORE YOU MODIFY IN CALIFORNIA.

Dash, a good rule of thumb in CA is if it's adjustable and they can see it, it's illegal.
as for as a b16 in a DA that not no problem. you should find your self a early 90's b16 then make sure all the smog for that motor is hooked up. with the DA i dont think youll be missing anything. this is the shitty part, dont mod the motor until after you take it to the bar.call the 800 number and ask for an inspection (it only $40) they will tell you what you need to add. after they sign off on the swap, they will re-sticker the car for re-test when it comes time. you will save your self time and money by calling them.
as far as motor and tranny, make sure they have a vin number attached to then and a receipt from were you got it, make sure it has a company logo not a cheap one, this will help with the cops. if there is no vin number, the will impound it!
after all that you can add parts just make sure they have a CARB EO# and you should be fine, some cops may ask you questions just be nice and most of the time they will walk if you do the swap the right way.

Do you guys not have a 15 year rule out there? Here basically if it is over 15 years old, they no longer care....about anything, including running open header. Headlights, windshield wipers and street tires is about all you need.
Anything older than 1976 is smog exempt.
Technically, yes.
If you put a 1980 engine in a 1976 car, you're supposed to go to a smog ref who will then issue the paperwork (assuming it passes inspection), and then the car would be subjected to smog checks as a 1980.
However, if the car is pre-76, there is no "smog check" required, so a newer engine in the car is never discovered (unless you really **** off a cop I suppose).
And the damn 1976 cutoff is the reason I purchased a 1975 Spitfire and sold my 1979. Yet, the 75 happens to somehow have 79 bumpers on it...
