Default Removing lower ball joint without removing upper ball joint?

Is it possible to remove the lower ball joint just by removing the wheel, removing the drive shaft and either a)using a clamp turned sideways or b) hitting it with a hammer? Or do I need to remove the upper ball joint and take the hub assembly off the car?

Im just wondering before I start the job.

Also do I need to find a suitably sized socket if using the clamp turned sideways method?

If anyone has any links to some how to's on this that would be great. I searched and managed to find a few tips but no pictures.

Thanks in advance

It will be easier if you take the upper ball joint off.

It will be easier if you remove it, along with the tie rod and brakes then just pull the spindle off the car, but it is possible leaving it on. You would just need the right tool. I just use a BFH and a peice of wood to get them out and the new one in.
