front lower ball joint

front lower ball joint
i need help on getting my lower front ball joint off. i was told that its a slip ring that is stopping it from comming off. and i tried a hammer and it didn't work

I just replaced mine and this is what I did.
First you have to remove the knuckle from the vehicle. Take the knuckle, flip it over so you can see the threaded end sticken up at you, and then tighten the knuckle in a vise (I vised onto the caliper tab). Cut the rubber boot off and remove the retainer clip (If it has one). Now get a socket that fits over the ball joint but is not bigger than the opening in the knuckle. Get a sledge and pound the socket over the ball joint. A few swings and it should be moving well, just pound it right through till it falls out (I know this is kind of the ghetto method). Take the new ball joint and put it in the opening and grab a piece of thick metal (1/4" thick or so) and place it over the back of the ball joint and pound the ball joint in. The metal is used to protect the ball joint from gettting dented by the hammer. The bigger the hammer the faster it moves.

i was wondering do i need to put the retainer clip on after i have the ball joint in b/c i cant get it on and i think i bent it where it wont fit
