Real Type-R Motor
So I talked my brother into trading his 5.0 Foxbody Mustang for a Honda, and this guy wants to trade him. He says it has a 98 Spec Type-R motor in it.
And I figured I'd ask the guys who know's their R thee best.
So question, how do I tell if it a real Type-R motor? And if its a 98 Spec.
I know to look at the block, B18C=JDM R, B18C5=USDM R
But are there any other obvious things to look at to tell if its an R motor or not?
All help is appreciated.
:flamesuit on: Just in case.

well be careful....
If it is B18C it could also be JDM GSR
THE BEST WAY TO TELL
Take the valve cover off and inspect...it is has dual valve springs, 99% of the time its a R
take a look at the FAQ, it tells you the difference between all of the motors....
- check what the head is stamped
- check which headers it has

This is my method, Check radiator water hose from head to radiator. Gs-R head radiator cool-let pass is located under vtec solenoid, Type R and B16 head radiator pass located under Dizzy like (kelsodeez) picture shown.
yea it does fade, but you can still see it after 100k unless the asshat that put the engine in cleaned it off for some reason. its also a great way to tell how old the engine is. if its just flaking a bit, probably about 30k. if its completely worn away and you can only see specks of green, its 100k and up.
that is the quickest way to tell, of course the block could still be a GSR but i would say unlikely
If it had the stock intake manifold there should be a stamp behind the I.M. P73,measure throttle body64mm, pr3 stamp on head, green mark on dizzy side if faded yes there should be alittle green left the the edge of the valvecover sits.the block can't really tell because the oil pan gonna stamp p72 (as gsr).
sorryy i brought this up from the dead.. whats another way of telling if u have a real type r? .. because mine is a 96 spec..it says b18c
besides the head, any other giveaways on the block??

Somebody is going to jump on me for something I have said incorrectly, used to it on here haha, but there is really no difference in the motors. '96 specs are hand ported and polished, while '98+ are not (I forget whether '97's were hand ported and polished). All B series heads are stamped with a date they were manufactured, and it is above the exhaust ports. You'll see a number with a slsh through it, and it will read either "9/6, 9/7, 9/8, 9/9, 0/0, 0/1." Also, '98 spec has a carbon fiber spark plug cover, while '96-'97's have silver. The header is also different, but that is it, aside from the tranny issue. Only JDM (UK I believe also, not 100%) '98+ spec ITR's had 4.7 final drive, while all others, inluding the '96 and '97 JDM ITR have a 4.4 final drive. I believe the 4.4 final drive tranny is stamped "J4D," and the 4.7 final drive tranny is stamped "N3E."
ITR motors are quite a bit "saltier" than their more common cousins, argh!

^Thankyou, I thought that's how it went, but didn't wanna put my foot in my mouth. But yeah, that's all you really need to know. I also doubt anyones gunna go through the hassle to look at the crank lol.
Externally you can look for the following on a JDM R swap:
- P72 block w/ B18C stamped on it
- PR3 head
- P73 Intake manifold
- P73 thorttle body
- 2.5" header collector (on both 4-1 and 4-2-1 manifolds)
- LSD stamp on transmission
- Green paint on head by distributor
- large 1-piece transmission brace that covers part of the oil pan
- Red Valve cover w/ silver grommets
- Chrome oil cap
- Gold Shift Linkage w/ chrome shift lever
- No dynamic dampers on driveshafts (if OEM)
