Default What year is my motor??

I have an JDM B18C and I want to know if it is a 98 spec and also if the transmission I have is the one with the 4.7FD. I cant check it myself because I am in Italy and my motor is in the states and I have someone checking it out for me I just need to know where to look to see what year it is. Here is the code for the transmission.

Transmission S803008858
Thank You.

It's there any way to verify for sure. Also the tranny had J4D stamped on it, it's that the 98 spec?

does the block stamp say B18C or B18C5?

just because the head might be stamped 00, doesnt mean the block is from the same year if the head was ever removed/swapped.

Where'd you get it from? Do you have any history on the motor?

Sounds like you have a 96-97 tranny on a block that would appear to be 98+ spec (probably 00) due to the head. I doubt someone swapped the head.

The first stamp on the head looks like 00. The second one has a 2 in it, so its either december or february, but AFAIK all 98spec engines had the carbon fibre plug cover???
The tranny is 96spec as it has J4D LSD stamped on it denoting the 4.4 final drive. 98spec trannies had N3E LSD stamped on them. Get who ever took the pictures to tell you whats on the first circular stamp

Is the FD the onlly difference between the 96 spec tranny and the 98 spec? And the motor, what's different between the 96 and 98 spec?

98 has the 4.7 final drive. 98 has a better header. 4-1 tubular header. Not sure about the cams.

If the tranny is not changed on the motor and that tranny and motor are from the same car, your motor is a 1996 or 1997 jdm itr.

I'm VERY sure that the tranny is from a 96 or 97 jdm itr. It's J4D, meaning 4.4fd, lsd, and the same gearing as all us itr's I think (about the gearing part). But I'm sure about the year.

I know that because I have that same tranny. Mine is a 97 jdm itr.

But ir the tranny did not come on the car, all that doesn't matter.

96-97 spec have a 4.4 final and hte 98+ spec have the 4.7 final drive. Also, the 98+ trannies have a longer 4th and 5th but they all have the same 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears.

So would it be worth returning the engine for a 98 spec model or should I tell them to pay me the difference between the 96 and 98 spec?

I dont' know what to do in your situation, but there's nothing wrong with 96-97 motors. I prefer the 96-97 tranny with the 4.7 fd. It's easier to change a final drive than a bunch of gears. I've heard many stories of all JDM motors having the same cams regardless of year, where as here in the states the 00-01 motors have different cams. Hopefully someone knows hte truth and has measured.

If you paid for a 98+ spec and they did in fact send you a 00 block and head with a 97 spec tranny, then I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask for some money back. What's the difference in price? You could take some of that money and go buy a 4.7 final drive

the difference between the 2 motors is $300 but how do I know for sure it is a 00' block and head? What is the possiblity that the motor is a 96-97 spec? Can anyone confirm that is a 00' motor?

I didn't know that JDM tranny's had the holes for the VIN numbers.

I am planning on getting an ATS 4.9FD. Should I worry about the tranny if I am going to change out the FD anyways and like I said before it also came with the Mugen header so that would pretty much take care of the header part. Do you guys think that the Mugen header makes up for the 96 spec tranny since I am planning on replacing it with a 4.9?

That looks like a 96-97 JDM ITR engine/trans. All 98 Spec ITR's came with faux carbon spark plug covers.

As you said though, I wouldn't sweat the difference in price due to the fact that the swap came with a Mugen header.

Personally, I would rather have the 96 Spec ITR trans with a 4.9 than a 98 Spec ITR trans. The longer 4th and 5th gears are very noticeable.
