d16y7 turbo new to honda tech!
Hey whats up everyone!, I'm Justin sorta new to the whole Honda seen. Or should i say boosting seen. I have a d16y7 yes i know its nonvtec only making 92hp n/a lol sad i know
and soon will go to a GSR swap! i picked up a used turbo kit of a kid i went to automotive school with at Alfred state for a d16's for a hundred bucks peak boost kit. Anyway im looking for some help on my first boost project was planning on doing it over the weekend in a few weeks. Im an auto technician but the whole boosting is new to me so if you could give me some positive feed back the set up is as follows...
-370cc RC injectors with injector clips
-Vortec FMU
-waste gate with 5.5 psi spring
-blowoff valve HKS
-feed and return oil lines
-boost manifold and boost controller
-inner-cooler with all the pluming
-t3t4 turbo
-down pipe
-apexi 2.25inch exhaust
-wideband 02 sensor
-boost gauge
-aem fuel rail
-new oil pan with gasket and tapped by STM motorsport for return line( my old one was leaking oil
)
-all necessary gaskets and hardware
i know its only d16y7 i now about the mini me, but anyway with positive feed back about this set up is there anymore i need??
Will the votec FMU be enough with only boosting up to 6 psi?
the engine has 100k stock on it im not looking for 1000000ss of hp just something with a little kick and still have decent reliability?
Should i be able to achieve getting a project done within a weekend such as this i have all necessary tools
One thing im also confused about is how to run my boost control with the boost manifold how do i do such a set up?
Also i shouldn't run anything lower then 93 octane pump gas correct?
Thanks for positive feedback honda tech and thanks for the welcome!

I don't know very much about boosting, but it would be a good idea to find a d16y8 intake manifold instead of using the y7 one.
And 93 or even 91 on low boost should be fine and pretty reliable if everything is tuned properly.

yes, good idea about the intake manifold thanks! and i wasn't going to do a tune just use the vortec FMU i hear does just fine under 7psi of boost!
ditch the fmu and go for some real engine management like crome, ectune, and of coarse my favorite..hondata s300. U can throw boost options along with a boost solienoid so u can run boost by gear and limit ur boost. I would just get it tuned and shoot for 200-220hp on 93 octane. I would also run a 3 inch exhaust. U can find a block for cheap and put some eagle rods and vitara pistons ($550) for 400+ hp.
make sure to either run a name brand or cast manifold. I would also opt for a name brand wastegate and good luck with the turbo cause itl probably break, check for oil in the ic pipes periodically. I just enrolled in automotive technologies, so what did u learn in school?
thanks for the suggestions man yes ive heard great things about hondata s300 i was just doing some research and found if for a budget to start out the vortec fmu will do the job up to a certain amount of boost!
with bigger injectors, theoretically u could take it to the max of even forged componets but it wont b percise at any level so thats y u need to ditch it. Plus u get full throttle shifting, dataloging, varies inputs and aux outputs, wideband input, and the list goes on with s300

does it just plug and play with the pcm in there or do i need to do an OBD1 conversion? and that means i need to be taken to tuner, the closest tuner that doesn't hondata is in Virgina is quite a trip or will it give me a range to work with from the start and it can program its self?
they will send a base map already downloaded into the ecu (its a whole new ecu, actually a used one thats been chipped and socketed) with ur praticular set up in mind. Now u should get it tuned even with a fmu, were u planning on tuning it with a wideband and fmu? ok just do that with a wideband and s300. U should be taking 1-2 degrees of timing out for ever pound increase over atmoshperic. Yes u will need a obdII to obdI conversion if ur car is a 96-00. U should have no problems finding a decent tuner in NY. The best in the business is in PA
I strongly suggest you check out and post in the forced induction forum as those guys will be able to help you out. Do some researching and search before posting.
