Are all of your other electronic components working ok? I've heard of this being a somewhat common issue with the hatch lock mechanism. I saw a recent thread about that issue.

Its probably the hatch actuator. I had this happen to my '00 GS-R. You'll have to crawl inside the hatch through the driver/passenger door and manually open hatch. My buddy did this for me by sticking his hand underneath the paneling and either pushing up or down on the lever to release the hatch.

Yeah this a not so uncommon that the actuator might have been killed. Sometimes if you shut the hatch it doesn't lock and the actuator is engaged and after a while it just burns out.

Like I said, crawl into the hatch and stick your hand underneath the paneling and manually release the hatch. Be sure to have a new hatch actuator ready to replace the broken one or you'll be crawling into your hatch every time you want to open the hatch. It's about 50-60 bux I believe. Be ready to replace it every 4-5 years...lol.

Wheres the manual release? Under the plastic panel under the actual clip?

Yes, underneath the plastic paneling...meaning you will have to stick your hand underneath it and scrape the crap out of your arms. Look at the last pic in the link that IanBlake posted. From my memory, you push the silver rod to the left...or was it to the right. I believe that rod will swing the lock on the hatch open. I only had to do this once and it was a few years ago. Hopefully someone has an easier solution for you.

When it happened to me, I got lucky. The 'release slider' that I usually used to open the hatch was stuck in the open position.

A few months later it wouldn't open, so, I drove over the roughest road I could find.
I was lucky again, because it opened. This time I removed the panel and drove with out it for several months.

Eventually, I bought a new actuator and as I was removing the original one, I found the plastic clip (closest to the passenger tail light) had slipped half way off. I snapped it back on and drove without the panel for another 6 months, without anymore issues.

I have a new actuator, too bad I opened it, before I saw the dislodged clip.

I hope my luck rubs off on you.

My hatch actuator never worked. I opened it by turning the key all the way to the right while lifting up on the hatch. Never had to open it from the inside.

hmm never heard this problem... i do know of the problem with 98-01 integras not having the in car cable hatch release because 98-01s came with the keyless entry with the hatch release... however everyone always loses or breaks there remote and never buys the acura replacement. therefor the only way to open the 98-01 haches is to shut the car off and walk to the back with the key and unlock it that way... very annoying. i now have a 97 which has the in car hatch release lever and love it

The trick is that you have to first, press the unlock button on the driver's door. Then go to the back of the car, insert key, turn all the way to the right until you can feel it sort of click, and quickly move the lever to the open position while the key is still turned all of the way to the right.

I have my actuator assembly completely removed from my car until I have time to buy a new unit and replace it - and this method works 100% of the time. If you don't press the unlock button, most likely it will not work for you.

The problem with mine was in the cap of the motor. One of the brushes more or less dissintegrated. The motor itself would work, that is until a load of any type was placed on it.....
