Default Hatch lever broken?

My hatch has never opened with a key. I have always used the lever on the floor. Well today i pulled that lever and it felt loose and did not open the hatch. Where should i begin to fix this?

open it with the key(if it even can, wasn't sure if you meant you never opened it or it just wouldn't open with one) close it tight, and try the lever again.

where the lever is ....take off the cover and there is a metal cord that is connected to that lever. This could be your problem and it might have come loose. It happened to me before
