Default speedometer problem

Wat's up guys. I just picked up a 94 4door lx. Originally the car had a d15 but the guy i got it from swapped a z6 into it. it's got a few problems but the one i'm worried about is the speedometer. the original engine wiring harness was pretty hacked so i replaced the harness. He told me the speedo has never worked but the plug was missing on the old harness. Now that i've got it all plugged in it started to work but it starts off at 40mph. The odometer is reading correct mileage so I was wanting some input. Is the gauged effed or do you all think there may be the possibility of poppin off the needle and resetting it at zero? LMK wat you all think.

check your speedo sensor drive... its behind the head usually.. if the wiring or the mechanism is faulty speedo will not work or work irratically...

I had this issue with a cluster before. When the ignition was turned to slot II the Speedometer would jump up to around 20mph or so. What I did was pull the cluster out. Pop it open, take the needle off, plug the cluster back in and turn Ignition to slot II..the little shaft the needle sits on will spin and be at whatever its pointing to(in your case 40mph). While the ignition is still at slot II put the needle back on at zero.

I did this and it worked fine and seemed to read correctly.
