Default Civic HX Blown Headgasket

Well, there is a 97' HX fairly local that I'm thinking of picking up. Exterior/interior look pretty good and I got the price down to 1k. Only problem is he said it has a busted window, needs a door panel and it blew the headgasket.

If he was dumb enough to drive around while overheating it, could it possibly cause more damage to the block and head beyond resurfacing and replacing the gasket?

Oh yes, that kind of damage can travel all through the motor. There are little tabs on the bottom side of a head that tell how much material can be surfaced off. Overheating again, and again can warp it well past those tolerances. Can also warp the hell out of the block, and fry bearings, as you would be mixing oil and coolant that whole time. But for a thousand dollars, you can't complain too much. Just swap it. GL

I personally think that is way too much. I got my HX for $1000 with nothing wrong except a dent in the rear quarter panel that just popped right out. I would talk him down more. thats just my $.02 But you are in California where everything is 5 times the price than the rest of America!

With the window you will most likely have to buy a new Glide track for the window, I had to do this with mine. It cost 80.00 from the honda dealer. Maybe even an window regulator also. I agree with hxkidd, Try to talk him down, but at the very least if you have to replace the motor I can get one here where I live for around 200.

Wow. A motor for $200? At a yard? That's like dream come true for California. I do agree everything seems to be overpriced here. You should check out the craigslist selection of cars.. hah.

HXKidd, how many miles did your hx have, and was it a clean title?

And thanks vtec. Hopefully the owner is smarter then that. I'll try to inspect the car very carefully.
