Taking the door panel off may make it easier but they just snap in. Try and get a small screw driver under it at the end of the door towards the back of the car. There isnt any screws, just small clips. Youll be surprised how easy it will pop out.

^^As he said, all you have to do is remove the door panel and you should be able to see the clips that hold them onto the door. On my car (96 hatch) I had to remove the black garnish on the outside of the door to slide them out. That particular piece is held on by 3 screws on the inside of the door. I had to this because part of that molding slips under the mirror mount and I don't think you can get it off any other way without tearing something up. Anyway, yeah, that's how you do it.

Once I got mine off I just stripped them down with some stripper, primed them, and repainted them with trim paint. They look good as new! It definitely makes the car look so much cleaner when you have these things in good shape, as well as your wiper arms, side skirts, and trim pieces (if unpainted). I hate to see a decent looking car and then look and see flaking window trim and grey side skirts. Good luck with the painting!
