here's what I like to do when buying cars...been good to me in the past....
1) Drive and shift it SLOWLY in to gears and feel for anything...does it feel like it catches anywhere?
2) Then shift it normally....feel anything?
3) Shift it faster.... feel anything?
4) How's reverse feel going into gear? Fight you at all? Put it into first and back into reverse...smooth?
5) Important...as you drive...does the tranny make any noticeable sounds....that just dont sound normal?
If it passes these test, I'm pretty satisfied that the tranny is sound. It's an old car, so as it gets older, it is what it is, but you dont want to buy anyone else's problems....
Clutch is clutch...if it goes...it is what it is...but bad synchros in a tranny is a burn...
Good luck!!

Ask the seller to open it up so you can actually inspect the synchros and hub sleeves, not to mention the shift forks. Without doing this, you're never really going to have an idea until you try to drive with it installed. You can shift it without it actually being installed but I don't really know what you'll determine from doing that since nothing is moving/spinning inside.
