Default how to check if a tranny is still good??

how do I check to see if a tranny is still good, its off the car.. should i hook up the shift linkage and see if it goes into the gears?

im asking because I had thought that my tranny f*uck up when i couldnt get into 1st gear..so I swap it with a dx tranny.. but when I did that I notice that 1 of the clutch disc spring was loose and one end of spring was out.. will that cause my tranny not to go into 1 gear..??

There's no way to see if it's good. You can see if it's functional though by shifting it around.

Other than that.. you'll have to take it apart and inspect:

synchros/hubs/rings/gears/shafts/bearings/shims/shift forks/shift mechanism etc.

You can bench test it spin the input shaft with one hand while shifting with the other. use a screw driver to shift and make sure you get 6 gears. You can watch the axle splines to see that it rotates when in gear. it won't tell you everything but it helps.
