1990 accord blue smoke , burns oil
Hi all.
My sister recently left her 1990 accord ex with 240,000 miles with me and I've got it for a month or two and want to fix some problems with it , hopefully this forum can help!
The biggest problem is that every time it cold starts , it pumps out massive amounts of blue smoke out the exhaust. I guess this is due to burning oil. My sister also says she has to put a lot of oil in it all the time too.
It also currently takes just a few seconds longer to start , but I'm guessing that's the spark plugs are dirty from the oil.
I'm not engine savvy really at all , I know how to change a flat , add fluids , maybe change spark plugs , but that's about it.

yup the valve seals sound like they are leaking so when the car is off oil gets past the seals and leaks down the valves into the cylinder where it burns off.
if it is burning quite a bit you will have to add oil often.

yes if you arent to good at working on motors it can be hard to change valve seals......you going to have to take the head off and that itself can be alot of work not to mention the work your going to have to do to get all valves out and new seals in......Then you will have to put it all back together and set timing.......i find it alot easier to find a new head (or even a used head that you know is good) for cheap and just throw it on, but like i said it does involve some work......
The valve seals can be replaced without removing the head. Remove the rocker assembly, each cylinder can be pressurized to hold the valves in place, use a valve spring compressor to compress the springs, remove the keepers, remove the springs, replace the seals, reinstall the springs, etc.

I just got a quote of 150$ to replace my valve seals , doesn't sound too bad.
Ok one last thing , are you guys sure that's what would cause my problem? Just to recap , It blows larges amounts of blue smoke when it starts cold , but eventually stops , and goes through a lot of oil. From what I've seen about valve seals it would make sense.
