Sounds like a loose wire somewhere, most likely the one in the plug on the back of the cluster. Does it stop working sometimes then others fly off the guage past redline??

it reads whatever rpm you are at and then to 0 then back up to what your rpm is back and forth ect... and somtimes its fine...so you think take the cluster out and check the plug on the back?

If there was drivability problems, a bouncing tach could be due to the igniter unit located in the distributor.

However, since it doesn't sound like there are drivability problems, it may be a bad component on the instrument cluster's printed circuit board.

My cluster was doing the same thing, turns out the signal wire from the ECU to the dash had come out of the plug on the back of the cluster.

Mine did that when my Alternator went out. The tech was bouncing all over.
