Default Wagon transmission problems?

Hello Honda world.
So I have have a 1989 Civic Wagon 2wd 5speed. Not to long ago it died on me. At least it doesn't drive anymore. The engine still starts up and runs fine. What happened was I started to take a left hand turn from a complete stop. About halfway through the turn there was this loud popping noise and the transmission was ejected out of 1st gear. I tried to go for second, but nothing, same with all of the gears.
A few odd notes. I can slip the transmission into any gear with out needing the clutch, but when it is in gear it engages with the speed sensor and if I rev the engine the speedometer climbs. Recently I did replace the drive shafts on both sides. I have no idea what the problem is and could really use anyones thoughts.
Thanks a ton.

your axle might have "popped" out of the transmission. check it. i have heard similar stories and this is the cause.

your alex or cv joint could have popped off or out of itself which sends all the power to the broken shaft thats disconects...and thus your tach reads MPH/kilos
