I have a 2002 s2k. The car is stock and has about 70K miles. About 6 K miles ago i changed the chain tensioner because it was very loud at idel. Sounded like noisy valvetrain. Now 6K miles later the sound is slowly coming back. If i change the oil it will go afay for maybe 1k miles then it will come back. I only run mobile 1 and i know the chain tensioner runs on oil pressure. Please help. Should i just go buy anotehr chain tensioner and hope for the best. Did i get a bad chain tensioner ? I never run the car low on oil btw.

I read somewhere recently that Mobil1 synthetic is known to eat up TCTs. Replace it and switch oils.

People have had many problems with the TCT on s2000's. There was a guy here or on s2ki that went through 3 or 4 of them and decided to change the timing chain guides, sound went away completely and never came back. The reason this happens is because, when the old TCT keeps tapping, it taps on the chain guide, and eventually wears away some metal, thus even with a new TCT the sound comes back.
Also there are modified TCT's for sale with stronger springs, this too make the sound go away permanently. Good luck in solving this issue, I know how you feel, it's frustrating. I had a TCT go out on my 04 at 53k, replaced it immediately, with no noise till I sold it at 60k.

one easy fix i read about on s2ki was to get that lil worm screw inside the tct that sits inside the spring to get it sandblasted and the noise will go away

I vote change your chain and guides, as the chain streaches, the tensioner maxes out and you get noise.....fyi....cam chains do not really streach, the pins that hold the chain togather and the plates that are the chain wear and the chain gets longer.....guides also wear, as they wear, this also requires the tensionor to extend more.....Used to work on my fathers alfa....it had the same problem with the timing chains.

OK i fixed the problem!!! Like i knew it was the chain tensioner. but instead of going out and buying a new one and only haveing that one last another 5k miles i just sanded down the worm gear in the chain chensioner with some sand paper and the sound is 100% gone.

good work... how did u reset the spring and piston??? Did you just screw it back into place and then use the pin to secure the piston???

it was too difficult to back into place with my hand. you can use a 8mm bolt that screws into the worm gear to retract the piston.
