500 break in miles ok??
i know i ask a lot of questions in here and im sorry for being so repetitive...
i am actualy on 320 break in miles right now and i am wanting to get tuned as quick as possible. i have been dong the proper oil changes and such.. i have read many places that 1000 miles is the accepted amount for break in miles as well as the accepted amount of mileds that you can switch to SYNTHETIC oil..
i have read other places that 500 miles is actually good enough but i didnt find out if 500 miles was ok to start puttnig in synthetic as well..
any help guys?
thanx again sorry to ask so many questions

id wait till 1000 myself, that way your sure the rings are set and such. getting synthetic in there 500 miles sooner isnt going to matter much, so you might as well be safe. thats just my opinion.

I think he was just joking around about launching your car from one end of the driveway to the other and call it a "break-in."

you should be fine IMO. Your rings will have seated by now (long time ago ) if not you have some serious problems.
put around town, bringing it through the gears for a while, don't stay at a constant rpm. After about 50 miles or so bring the rpms up, do that for a while. After 100 miles get on the freeway, quickly. then get off at the first exit, and drive around normal for about 10 miles.....You should be fine to romp on it by now, just don't get crazy and redline it at every light.
My car was warmed up (20 min idle) then driven about 5 miles before it saw redine
.. I just took it easy for the first 500 miles before i treated it like a seasoned engine. It's holding up just fine for me.
think about it like it's a new car, they have a "break in" period follow that and you'll be fine.

ok so the concensus is 1000 miles.. and that the break in process isnt always all about the rings but the rod and main bearings as well.... got ya
There are two thoughts behind breaking in a motor.
Some say break in motor with boost and others say not.
However usually when babying the motor, 500 miles is perfectly fine. 500 miles is plenty for the rings to seat.

Personally, I would wait myself at least a couple of thousand but I am a wuss and don't want to waste a $5000 motor because I couldn't wait to change my oil.

I don't know. I never use synthetic oils on any of my motors.. Only use regular Castrol oil.
But 500 miles is plenty of miles for the rings to seat, seal...

I broke mine in for 1000 miles to be safe, and there was still 20% leakdown. IF the motor is built correctly, a small break in period of 500 miles should be plenty, just do a leakdown test, if your 0%, you should be fine..
Wow 20%, that's a lot... Brian broke his motor in before the start of last season and put on ~1700 miles, (keeping the revs below 3500) after a full season of racing/street driving (he boosts up everywhere!) he's at 2% across...

suprdave - built my motor that had 87 break in mile before its first full boost pass.
and the break-in and the first full boost pass were on the same day
held great, no smoke, car felt awesome
so i think it has alot to do with engine builder.
but the general norm i thought was 500 miles.

I think rings are set after about 50 miles or a half an hour of good variation driving.
I put about 200 miles on my N/A motor, then headed straight to Gaineville Raceway. I made hundreds of passes, and 3 1/2 years later, the motor is still kicking *** with the new owner in Michigan.
