slight in-out shaft play, time for rebuild?
Hi, Ive got a s258 bep turbo, I purchased it new, ran for about 1.5 seasons (up here seasons are only 4-5 months) It has about 30-40 passes @ 32psi, and 30-40 passes @ 27psi.
The turbo has zero up-down shaft play, however it does have about 1.5mm in-out shaft play. There is zero oil residue on the exhaust housing, or compressor housing/charge pipes etc, the car never smoked. The turbo spins freely as well.
All signs show the turbo is great shape, except for the slight in-out shaft play. Keep in mind this is with the turbo off the car on the bench, drained of oil.
Im selling it to a friend, so I want to make sure its still decent shape.
Any insight? Is it due for a rebuild?
Thanks.

Hey HamiltonRex..
258/259s typically have a tiny bit of axial "play" over time, especially when run at such high levels, but that's rather normal (strange as that may seem) as long as it isn't over .020" of actual axial change. In other words, if it isn't moving the top part of the inducer wheel more than .020", you're good.
You'd see some definate signs of issues from axial play it it were really an issue. So you can go ahead and sell to your friend without any worries.
