Default replacing fuel tank on CRX, how to get old gas out

I need to change the fuel tank on my 88 CRX Si, as it developed a slow fuel leak in the tank when it was stolen. I already bought the new fuel tank and have the car on jack stands and am ready to change it...except for the fact that the CRX has a full tank of gas.

So I am trying to figure out how to get all the gas out of the tank without driving it, as it is not registered currently. I have been letting it idle on jack stands at about 1500 RPM for a couple of hours, but the fuel level has not really gone down much.

I know there is a drain plug on the gas tank, but I don't really have a 10 gallon container to collect it all as it quickly leaves the tank. The only thing I can think of using that I have is the pan that I use to collect the used oil when I change the oil. Even if I drain out 3 gallons at a time, I am not sure what I would do with the gas afterwards. I am not sure if it would be wise to reuse it in another car.

So here are the options I can think of at the moment:

1. Let the car idle on jack stands with my garage door open for several hours to get most of the gas out of the tank.

2. Put the oil pan under the gas tank, release the drain plug and let the gas pour into the oil pan, then close the drain plug when it the oil pan is close to becoming full. Then put the used gas in a buckets to drop off at a hazardous waste disposal center.

I am not sure how quickly the gas will drain out when I undo the drain plug if I do the second option. My fear is that 10 gallons of gas will spray all over the garage and driveway I share with 5 other townhouses.

Any advise if appreciated..thanks

There is a drain plug on the tank. The plug has a 17mm bolt head. Replace the aluminum crush washer when replacing the plug. It won't spray all over the place, use a regular size drain pan.

would you reuse the gas, or drop it off at a hazardous waste collection place

Why would you NOT use the gas again?

If its a full tank, its worth it to go to walmart and go buy a big freaking bucket for a couple bucks

i have already drained the fuel out into a couple of buckets. I think sometimes I make things more complicated than they really are. And I noticed that if there is dirt or impurities in the gas, they fall to the bottom of the bucket or tank. And actually, there appears to have been a lot of dirt in the old gas tank. So yeah, I will just put the gas back in once I get the new tank hooked up. thanks

I can tell you from experience, pouring it in the yard and lighting it on fire is not a good idea.
