What do I have?
How do I figure out if my car is OBDI or OBDII... What ECU it has, etc...
Its a 99 Civic Si with a swapped out everything (rebuilt car). It has a B16A and a GSR 5 speed tranny. That's pretty much all i know about it.

So this code will just be on a label somewhere on it right? The ECU isn't even screwed in to anything.. it's weird. Like it doesn't even fit there... I'll put up pics if I can't figure it out.
There should b a code on the side of the ecu and be something like P28, P30, P06, P2T, ect.. That's what tells u what ecu it is. It will have some numbers and letters infront of and behind the Pxx. For exsample one of the ones I have is a P05 but on the ecu's white tag it says 37820-P05-A00.
the ECU should fit. The OBD2 ECUs and OBD1 are both the same size. The only thing would be if you had a JDM ECU, but it's smaller.... Your cables probably just aren't tucked in there right. Anyway, your ECU should have a code on a white sticker and it will be
----- P72 --- if it's for the GSR or P30 if it's the Civic Si ECU. The dashes will be numbers, but they're of little meaning for you right now.
The easiest way to tell if your motor is OBD2 would be to look at the front of the motor, right above the oil pan and see if there's a green tag with a VIN on it. Or you can look for the crank sensor wire by the crank pulley or look for the oil cooler which was only used on 94 and 95 models.
By the way, you kinda got screwed with the motor combination. It's like someone took two good swaps and gave you the reject parts, the torqueless B16 and the slightly longer geared GSR tranny.

I know for a fact I got screwed. I have no clue what I was thinking when I bought this car. Mainly for how much I paid for it. Not even getting into that one.
Thanks for your help so far. I will get back on here later probably once I have a chance to look at everything.

No it's the same one. My dumb *** paid $7,500 for it. That's why I'm an idoit. Oh well, live and learn, huh...
So anyway, the computer is a P2T... That right? haha I need a new distributor for it now.
Edit: Did a little research. Apparently that is the right one. And comfirms the car should be OBDIIB. Well.... Off to find a new distributor to get rid of the MSD junk.

so wait.
you paid 7500 for the car
and immediately for sale for 2k less?
you are gonna take an immediate 2k loss?
i would fix it and drive it for a while, get your 2k worth
if you tell us the problems it has and get as much info on the issues you can fix it with our help.
i joined HT in 2005 i had no idea how to work on a car.
now im pretty knowledgable and im a mechanic now
hang in there brother
P2T = stock SI ECU 99-2000 OBD 2
you need to find out if your motor is obd1 or obd 2
what problem does the car have?

No I bought it last year this time... When the book value was actually that amount... But anyway.
Right now I have broken pieces in the distributor and have to get that replaced. But before it just always misses real bad under acceleration until you drive it for about 10 minutes and everything is warmed up. Then even after that it will rarely ever rev past 6 grand with missing real bad again. I'm hoping the distributor was one of the main problems. I put new plugs in it last night and am going to put on new wires as well. It had an MSD external coil and all and I am not putting that back in this time, just running OEM internal coil.
How would I find out what the motor itself is. When I looked up the distributor the harness is exactly like the one off any normal B16 99 Si. So I am assuming its OBD2 as well.

sounds like its obd2 as well.
and yes if your dizzy has pieces broken off inside, i would assume that is the misfire issue.
i would get a stock one as well and get rid of the msd, its not necessary

is this a JDM engine? is there a number after b16A?
i dont know if JDM engines have 2 o2 sensors or not
either way, if your car required both o2 sensors it WOULD be throwing a code
does your states inspection require that sort of thing?

No inspections yet here in IN. I think it is a JDM motor, but again, not for sure. No number after the A. It was from hmotorsports.com, at least thats what the guy told me.
its a JDM engine then.
i dont know much about the differences in USDM and JDM motors
someone else will have to chime in on that
sorry i cant be of further help
