Default Keyless remote entry question

I got a key less entry remote from my G/F for Christmas and I do not have the stock head unit. Is there anywhere to configure the remote without the stock Head Unit?

Thanks Honda-Tech.

Is the unit the Honda OEM keyless entry? What is the trim of your car (EX, LX, DX)?

For the '96-'98 Honda Civic stock keyless you need the stock radio that contains the keyless entry brain. I believe the HX should be prewired for it.

The HX (LX and EX included) factory radio should have the keyless module attached to it already. If you do not have your stock radio, you'll need to get one as NOFX advised.

Oh, and the way you can tell the radio has keyless is it will have a black horizontal antenna on the backside of the radio. Other radios won't have anything remotely like that.

I'd post a photo, but when I looked yesterday for one I couldn't find one.

That would suck to have to have the stock radio for keyless to work. Screw that

Good point.

Although you need the stock radio for the keyless to work, you can purchase Metra 1720T radio harness that will power your stock radio and allow you to install an aftermarket (see https://honda-tech.com/forums/audio-security-video-27/96-98-civic-install-metra-1720t-just-get-two-wiring-harnesses-728479/). I used to install for Circuit City and we used to hide the factory radio behind the cup holders in the center console.
