catch cans do what you think, catch oil.

you can easily vent your block to atmosphere and just run a hose off and to the ground. so no, you dont need one.

but if i see you doing that at the track, prepare to get punched in the face. i dont want to hit an oil slick at 200km/hr

I think they're neccesary. Since I've melted the plastic that holds the dipstick in place, oil vapor shoots out of it when I boost if the catch can isnt hooked up.

The pressure will find a way out one way or another; whether its the dipstick hole in my case, or your oil pan or valve cover gaskets.

I would say any turbo application should have a properly set up crankcase venting system. But depending on your boost level, your stock pcv system might be able to vent it enough. Basically when you're running a FI setup, you can create positive pressure in your crankcase. This pressure needs to be relieved otherwise it will find other ways to escape like out your dipstick, piston rings (causing you to burn oil), and through any other gap it can find.

its no myth that even stock honda engines dont breathe well.

yes you will benefit from a catch can. and yes you will probably get punched/roundhouse kicked if you vent to the ground.

look in the faq's at the top there are a few threads pertaining to catch cans.
