Oil level drop while running?
I recently boosted my b20b. I add my 4 quarts of oil, but it seems to pour out of the return hole for the drain line. my dipstick tube might need pushed back in or something because my oil reading might be off. with oil dripping out of the return hole my oil level is between the 2 dots. but Im just wondering how much the oil level drops while the car is running? should the oil come out of the hole? even with 4 quarts? my return fitting is as high up as it can be. I just want to see how far it drops while the car is on before I smoke my turbo. thanks
my little diagram I made, kinda confusing. Its an oil pan by the way. haha

if you return line is as high as it will go you really don't have much of an option there. I also have a b20 and with the engine running the oil level on the dip stick drops almost a half quart. I think your going to be fine with using 4 quarts. how big in diameter is your return line? As long as you don't restrict the flow of the return oil you won't hurt your turbo. One thing i will say though is just make sure your return line (is) inline with a main cap and (NOT) a rod because iv seen that cause back pressure on the return line at higher rpm. because it flings oil back at the return line hole!

Re: Oil level drop while running?
well for starters the line looks a little kinked and could be collapsing when it gets warm. secondly you dont check engine oil level when an engine is running. the oil isnt going into the return line its in the damn motor lubricating the internal parts LOL. Im surprised no one caught that part. THIRD DUH !!!! the oil will pour out of the return hose barb if you dont have a hose on it. thats called a full pan. once then engine starts the oil level goes down and the turbo will drain just fine with a good drain. also be sure the center section of the housing has the drain straight down and not turned at all for proper gravity draining of the CHRA
Anyway that line will deteriorate quickly, get a stainless braided hose and fix the return line. If you've smoked two turbos then you have to much oil pressure going to the turbo or to little pressure. eleborate on what "smoked" means when your talking about these two turbos in question please

i just wanted to make sure that the oil level drops enough when the engine is running. I know the line looks kinked, but thats actually the end part of the fitting, it sticks out real far so I dont think that was the problem. I got my braided hose today.
by smoked turbo, i mean the seals got blown. and oil is leaking out of the exhaust side housing bolts

Re: Oil level drop while running?
What brand of turbo is it? ball bearing or journal bearing? What size is your feed line? Do you know how much oil pressure you are getting?
If there is a problem it is not the height of your return line, that is where everybody runs them and they don't have problems.

im not really sure what size it is. i have the same one in that picture. do you want a bigger restrictor for a journal bearing turbo? or a smaller one?

Re: Oil level drop while running?
i have a chinese 57 trim turbo and i use a .08 restrictor i have installed 3 of these all using the same restrictor with no issue, .065 to .08 is what i recommend, your restrictor may be too big or too small its so hard to tell from a pic. what kind of oil pressure does your car make?
