if its in the car take it for a test drive...also do a compression or leak down test, check for white or other color smoke, look at spark plugs, check for clean oil,no oil or coolant leaks and make sure tranny goes into gear smooth and doesn't grind...!!!

Pull out the dip stick and check to see if the oil is fresh... Why you ask??
Because most shady bastards put fresh oil in the engine (when they are out of the car) so you wont think 2 times about bad rings etc..

also pull the pin on the tranny to see if the gears will move. and pull spark plugs to see there condition, it could tell u alot about how it was running. oil like stated and pull the valve cover if allowed to see how it looks like in there, should be relativly gold like good oil, if really black and crappy it could b a bad sign. hope this helps
how does bad rings make the oil any darker than it will already become during normal usage? the only thing someone might try to hide is oil shards or chocolate milkshake oil from a blown hg. regardless, if the engine is out of the car, and the oil is brand new, then something fishy is most likely going on.
