im effin overdue on a trans flush, any one got suggestions on what is the best fluid?
doing it on my EJ8.

i hear a lot of good things about the Synchromesh "friction modified".. but what about compared to the Honda MTF or Redline MTL fluid? any/all input is appreciated.

 

Torco MTF

 

The only thing about the torco mtf is that it will not work too well with synchros that are old and getting worn out. I put it in my own car and it started grinding 3rd gear immediately.

 

honda mtf or vavoline 5w30 with 80w90 works on my DD and Drag car and my buddies K24 runs 10.80's

 

x2. I was a firm believer in Honda MTF, until I tried this stuff. Shifting is definitely much smoother.

 

This can be seen as a good thing

If the synchros are old and worn out, it's time to replace them. I would never recommending masking the problem by just changing tranny fluid.

 

I had AMSoil synchromesh 5w30 in a gsr trans from HMO, the trans grinded like a month after I got it installed, I'm not very happy at all, I drained the fluid like 7,000 miles later and the fluid was very black.. I switched to royal purple and it'd not doing much of anything either..

I'm leaning towards torco or redline

 

honda oem mtf.

the other thicker stuff is good but should be used for high hp cars i think. mainly for gear protection.

i used the redline for a while and noticed it needs to warm up a little longer before it goes into the gears better. also i had problems grabbing 3rd at the track with the redline stuff so i switched back to the oem mtf and caught each shift perfect everytime.

oh and them oem mtf is cheaper. lol.

 

I heart Redline Lightweight SHockproof in the straightcuts... Except cleaning it up... LOL...

 

so whats god for daily driving an occasion spirited driving?

 

Torco MTF. RTF if you don't mind the expense.

 

For a daily driver I recommend Genuine Honda MTF.

For the track use Torco MTF.

 

Guys, just keep in mind when selecting a syncro fluid, it's not just a matter of brands (additive chemistry) but also a matter of weight. Syncro fluids go from ATF-thin stuff all the way up to 90 weight gear oils. Here's a list of brands and their weight in centistrokes (cSt) at 100C/212F :

What about the honda mtf III ???

so....you guys would recommend torco mtf stock ls tranny, but usally revs around 5-6 sometimes tough to shift in to 2nd gear no grinding, im doing a flush next week where would i buy this stuff?

 

another pointless thread...also another thing that needs to be pointed out is the people saying 75w80 75w90 etc gear oil is to heavy of an oil....little do they know this is about equal to a SAE 10w30 rated motor oil. Honda mtf is "mtf spec" mtf-7289 and made by chevron/texaco and is a gl-4 70w80 gear oil. Then honda came out with the MTF II which was very "thin" compared to the original MTF and they also have MTF III which has much higher viscosity then either and is about on par with a 75w90 gear oil or SAE 10w40 motor oil.

i would like to know if anyone has tried the new honda mtf-3 or any of the newer gl-6 oils (another thing to point out is there is no such thing as gl-6 anymore...gl-1 gl-2 gl-3 and gl-6 ratings were discontinued in 1995) but people can still make and sell oils under those API ratings. (even though there is no governing body that will test to ensure those ratings are accurate)

 

We have use RedLine in a variety of vehicles and can not think of a single instance where it didn't make the vehicle shift better from Porsche Cuppes to even a beater Toyota 4Runner with auto to manual box swap - talk about extremes from racing to street!

 

Try it in a Honda, report back when bearing cages fail.

 

IDK Bone, Redline LW SP works great in mine.... H's have steel cages, BUT i have also replaced counter bearings with plastic caged honda OEM replacements (not sure as to the rhyme or reason to why sometimes you get plastic and sometime steel when ordering the same part number)...

Never had a problem. Then again, getting the trans up to temp (IE warming the car up) probably helps I would think ...

 

We have and no issues. Maybe our guys aren't using as hard as yours? Under what conditions are you experiencing failure? How built are the cars? How are they used? None of our guys drag race if that is the circumstance. Also, none of our guys are pulling 500+WHP (by far I am the highest with mid 400s).

 

What weight would allow for faster shifting in competition use, both for new, and for worn synchros?
