y8 bottom end rev limit.
currently building a head up for my y8. i know they have oil issues and was wondering how high would i be able to rev the bottom end safely?... b7 oil pump btw
I have no idea what will really happen with a sohc bottom end but I know they have small rod bolts. in fact they are the same as the ls ones which people upgrade when they make it a higher revving ls-vtec. so I wouldnt try to go much further than redline without rod bolts. as far as oil flow i have no idea.
y8's are highly know for spun rod bearings. If your going to be doing any work do yourself and take the time replace them. i myself have lost a completly stock y8 to a spun bearing.

um i got a question...how u check your oil? i know the oil dipstick sticks in the y8 but im pretty sure the b7 has no spot for it. lol but yeah ive heard y8 pumps are sucky do to the flow rate or whatever. but ive seen alot of write ups bout porting and shimming the oil pump just for better protection
haha i feel like a dumb ***. i bought the pump with the short block but everything was in pieces so when i was putting it together i noticed i had a b7 oil pump and that i had no oil hole... i knew the general location of the y8 dipstick but didnt know it was in the actual pump. (im used to the z6) so i guess i'll be picking up a new oil pump and porting and shimming it? i mean all the bearings are going to be new in this motor and the crank just came out of the shop so hopefully i would like to rev to 8k safely

yea a z6 block and a y8 head with y8 tranyy would be best, and btw not sure what your project/goals are but d-series are very unresponsive no N/A mods for example a fully built d16 head and block high compression ITB updgraded Fuel header exaust etc. would make around 180 WHP with a biult head and a z6 block, with arp's top and bottom, a good clutch and flywheel turbo'd you would have yourself a little monster
6,xxx miles on the motor, it makes 430whp nd 305ft lbs torque. i did nothing to the oil pump besides replace it when i built the motor. i get 20psi of oil pressure at hot idle, and 95psi at cold start.
why do people always want to run their engines to the maximum rpms? there isn't any power there, even if u upgrade the valvetrain and cam, you prolly wont benefit 8K + rpms.

7800 is about the highest you wanna go, built or not.
Anything higher than that is pushing it, and unnecessary. IMO
Why try to squeeze those few extra HP if it means risking a catastrophic failure? You really don't gain much more after 8000.

lots of people make power past 8k, i had a friend that made power to 11 on a itr
Yea I guess cbr's and gsxr's and other bikes and F1 motors spin in excess of 10k rpms because they dont make power past 8k, huh? Maybe they do it just to say their motors rev that high? IDK?
I have a D series with a few bolt ons, I'm no expert, but revving high is fun/addictive.. I hit 8200 regularly

Upgrading teh head just isn't enough. The oil pump may be bigger but the oil galleys in he block, crank etc will be the same size. Also have you had the crank balanced to a higher limit? What is teh y8 harmonic balancer rated up to?

I want to run a high revving motor too but either no one has done all this research because they felt it wouldn't give them much gains or they didn't publish it.
My advice, rev higher, just not crazy high. Stay with 8k or so i'd say.

no good point. i'll shift around 8k im sure i'll be fine and if i spin a rod bearing i always got that trusty b7 in my garage that i could put back into to action in an afternoon.
