will your car start if it is off by a tooth in timing?

how do you know it is off? and how can it randomly fall out of timing. My timing belt is brand new. I just put on a new alternator belt and had to torque the crank pulley to get the belt on but I don't know if that could make the belt jump a tooth.

 

if it was installed incorrectly or if the belt wasnt tensioned correctly

 

Well thats the thing the car ran fine before i had to replace the alternator belt...and now since the new one is on the engine runs rough...I don't know what would have messed up the timing....

 

if thats all you changed its probly not the timing do a tune up
