Synthetic or Conventional
So I am trying to deciding on if I should stay with conventional Oil on my car
Specs:
1995 Accord Wagon LX with H22 Type S. Header, hi-flow cat and full exhaust, Stage 1 clutch, lightened flywheel and CAI. Engine wise this is all
Engine has est. 62k miles on it. Engine was installed with new water pump, all belts.
Currently I am running 10w30 Castrol GTX or Honda OEM oil. Should I move up to Synthetic?
Best friend is pushing me to move up to Torco at least to SR-1 if not SR-5, or even goo with basic synthetic oil which would be Mobil 1. He runs a h22 built to make 232 WHP.
I use OEM filters or Hemp.
Shoud I stay with conventional or move up? The car does see a few autocross event a year.

Honestly man, the price difference isnt that much...
Not sure where you are located, but if there is an Advance Auto Parts place near to you, treat yourself to one of their oil change specials...
$25 for 5 qt's of castrol edge (which is pretty much the most expensive mass market synthetic) and a free Purolator Pureone filter (excellent filter, i prefer it over the oem)
The synthetic will definitely help when it comes to protection and extended drain intervals...
If there is no AAP near to you, visit WallyMart and grab some synthetic there (but don't get the filter there obviously)..

Oh I do Mobil 1 on my Miata. The oil change done by me cost about $30.
The accord oil change run about $15-20. Conventional
But SR1 or SR 5 Torco oil with filter will run about $60-75 per oil change.

Go synthetic, get at least a Purolator filter, and you're good.
You won't have to worry whether your oil is doing its job. Its a piece of mind thing.
And like Shahriar35 said, for good synthetic and a filter, its like 30 bucks if you do it yourself.

I personally use Mobil1 (NOTE NO "E" in MOBIL), but I go by the principle that Synthetic > Conventional, so any brand synth is an upgrade to me...
RE: Boutique oils such as torco, amsoil etc, I'm sure they are great products, but I don't consider them necessary for what is primarily a daily driver.. If it was a racecar or something that was taken to the track often, by all means!
If you want extra filtration/protection, Mobil1 Extended Performance Filter is pretty much as good as it gets off the shelf..
Purolator PureOne is also a very strong choice (for half the cost)

i use nothing but straight diono oil every 6K miles> i have driven nearly 500K miles in my life and never had an engine die due to oil related issues. using anthing other than what the manual suggests is a waste of $$ imho. The only machine that I use synthetic in is my scooter and that has everything to do with it's heat rejection and the fact that the engine spends nearly all of it's time at WOT.
what type of oil usually begins a huge controversey. i think it comes down to personal preference. personally, i like halvoline and whatever filter. why halvoline? because thats what i was raised on thinking is the best oil. show me proof, not a commercial, not an add, but DOCUMENTED PROOF saying that "this" oil is better than "that" oil and so on, and i might change my mind. when oil is heated to running temp, synthetic or conventional, it is the same viscosity. i'm not going to argue what oil is better than this, or that. its a never ending arguement.
