Default Turbo choice for D16Y8 build

Ok, I'm in the process of building a street/strip Y8. Now my goals are to have a car capable of 400+whp and the torque not too far behind. I'm thinking somewhere in the area of 380ish whp 400 or so and at least 300ft lbs of tq. Now the thing is I want something that will spool as earlier possible while still providing me with the top end I'm looking for without running out of breathing room. I have all of the supporting components including Comp stage 2 turbo cam,, Skunk 2 valve springs, Crower Titanium retainers, Unorthadox cam gear, 750cc injectors, and so and and so forfth. It all will be on stock sleeves. Please help me out H-T

It's really one or the other... you either spool early or you make big power... pick one... or spend crazy money on a VVT turbo if you can find one that has the A/R's you want.

Just get a 57trim t3/t4 or larger compressor with a .55 or larger exhaust side. the larger you go on the exhuast side the longer the spool... anything below .55 will probably choke out in the high rpms and not make the power you want.

I have a T3/T04B 57 trim turbo with .55 a/r.. even with .55 I'm probobly going to choke out up top...

The main things from what I've been told with making 400hp on a SOHC D are:

1. Head is very restrictive and will stop making power as you up the boost once it's over it's V/E... so porting is probably required.
2. It's race gas only at that power level unless you really have the head ported well and the whole setup is very efficient.

Course Bisi's got a thread right now saying he's shooting for 700whp on pumpgas on a d... but if there's anyone who knows how to open up the heads on SOHC's for power it'd be him.

Also wait for Shodan to chime in if he does... he's the resident turbo guru.

Thanks for the input. I am getting the head fully ported for these reasons exactly. I have all of the following components for the head
Comp Cam (Stage 2 forced induction)
Skunk 2 valve springs
Crower Titanium retainers
Stock valves
Blox Intake Manfold
And The Shodan and I speak quite frequently and discussed the "Silver Surfer" but I wanted input from all angles just to have some opinions

380whp t0 400whp is REALLY TRYING TO PUSH IT with a GT2871R. Those are for lower HP goals.

check out the holset thread..

prob check out the hx35... hy35 has a 9cm housing... might start to choke out on a 2L (depending on how high you plan on reving, supporting mods, etc..)

again... read through the holset thread.. answers lie in the 100 + pages..

Billet wheel 5557. Rated much lower then the power it will produce. 58mm billet wheels have made 650+whp. You wont see those numbers from a 30r (57mm). If u want tq out of a single cam your gonna need a hard hitting turbo. A 30r makes a lot of tq but for the price its not money well spent. A 5557 is gonna spool up faster then a 50trim (54mm) but make power in the range of a 30r. So basically a 50trim powerband with 30r power. Why buy anything else?

I dont even know why i reply to these threads. You know your gonna get some 20 year old cheap **** garrett that is maybe 100 bucks cheaper then a billet. That 57trim is older then i am at 23. Dude, get a ****ing billet wheel and be fast.

Billet 5557 T3 .63. You can get a smaller .48 but even a 50trim will choke with boost in the 20's with such a small housing. Do yourself a favor and listen to me.

My friends ask me for some reason what turbo to go with but never go with what i say. 1 listened to me. He went from a 6165 on 30psi which i tuned on a built 2 liter DSM. On 30psi and C16 with no timing it made 490whp. With a SMALLER billet wheel, he went with a 5862 and made 568whp on the same boost with only 110, with the same timing. Again i tuned it.

The motor in my Honda was in a friends Honda with a 30r. My car made more on 8psi then his did on 12psi. On the same dyno by the same tuner. Oh and he used S300 i only use Crome lol. I can get a billet wheel for 720 shipped, his 30r was 1300, you do the math.
