what caused my gsr tranny's countershaft's teeth to break?
here's the story, i took a ride from philly to delaware and back. no aggressive driving or anything. coming back i hear a clunking noise from the tranny, only when the wheels are rolling. axle was fine but when the tranny was opened i noticed that the part where the countershaft meets the final drive ring, there were teeth missing. my question is, why did they break with normal driving? i used 10w 30 mobile1 oil in it. educate me
If the countershaft or ring gear were ever replaced with a used part, that could cause it. If you beat on it and started cracks, then it could finally break under normal driving. Piece of debris could have gotten between the teeth, etc.
It just happened to die during normal driving. Most likely past abuse led to fatigue on the parts and the parts finally gave away. But there are others, like Aquafina said.
ok i agree with past abuse. i dont beat on it so i was surprised about it. sometimes i get aggressive on it but not like people i know because its a daily driver. i realized that anything can happen, plus it was unknown what mileage it had on it. do other people have this problem too?

I'm not saying you did the most abuse on it. You never know what a previous owner has done to it. As for other people having this problem... you have no idea how many people say that stuff just breaks when they are 'just driving'... from 2nd gears to rods through the block. lol It happens.
How much fluid was left in the case when you pulled it apart? If it was low, the gears will (eventually) overheat and fail. Did you notice any fluid leakage out of an axle seal?
