Default Selling GS-R To Mechanic!

So my timing belt got ripped apart by the blades of my water pump and my valves are probably bent so the engine does not start. I have no money and it will probably cost close to $800 to fix. I have had an unusual amount of problems from this car so I'm a little worried about getting it fixed because I'll be wondering "what will break next?"

So I was talking to my mechanic and he offered to buy it off of me, so my question is what would be a good amount of money to sell it for? It's a 2000 Integra GS-R that has a B16A engine and a few dings here and there. Blue book value is $4440 for fair condition.

Anyone got any suggestions as to what amount I should offer him?

How does one establish blue book value for an illegal car?

You list CA as your location, and the only B16 that would be legal would have to have come from a 2000 Civic Si, as older engines in newer cars are illegal.

I believe that the buyer could actually take you to court for selling an illegal car. Keep that in mind and do your research first, as you don't want to get screwed over it later. I know I'd hate to have someone who knew what they were buying change their mind after the fact and expect me to pay to make it pass smog...

Ignoring legality, its basically a shell at this point if the valves are bent (since that could also mean pistons and/or rods could be damaged). $2k would probably be reasonable if the body and interior is in great shape, lower otherwise.

I was in the same oat as u are in.
If you lived in Sacramento id hook you up with a friend of mines that does new valves, valve seals etc etc work for dirt cheap. I had him putt in new vlave stemm seals, double exhaust springs, around 6 new valves plus grid them in for 220. Youre mechanic knows that if he gets the car of of you that it will be an easy fix considering thats the only thing wrong with youre engine.

I actually never thought of the legality of it. I'm pretty sure that the engine is from a 2000 Civic Si though, not 100% on that. I did purchase it from an actual Honda dealer though, so I'm not sure what to think of that really.

As for igorka_91... I really did wish your friend was down in SoCal because I would definitely appreciate a valve job for $220!

I didn't actually offer to sell it to him btw. My mechanic is the one that offered to buy it. He said that he buys junk cars all the time to fix them up and sell them.

Yeah youre mechanic knows that he can make money on the car when he fixes it. If i was in youre boat i would get a used b16 timing belt and put it on. Start it up and c how it runs. Theres always a chance that you didnt mess up any valves. worse case scenario is wasting like 2 hours on the job and the valves are bent for shure but if you sell to youre mechanic and he installs a new timing belt and it runs like a champ and you find out that it was all good. You will kik youre celf for a while. Id alighn the cams to were all the valves are closed. Take the spark plugs out. And get and air compresor or the tool you use to do a leak down test and dump some air into each cyllinder. If it leaks trough the intake valves you will hear air coming out of the intake mani. But if it leaks out of the exhaust valves you will hear air in the exhaust valves. But you have to make shure that youre cams are set to were all the valves are closed. This would be the easiest way to se if youre valves are toasted.
Sorry for the long paragrah lol
OH how hight were you reaving when this happened..?

Its great to have friends ho can do head work for cheap.

He actually did put a timing belt and a new water pump and tried starting it up for me and didn't work. I could try doing the compression test though... I might give it a chance.

Yeah give it another chance. Dont give up on it untill you know for shure that the valves are bent.

you figure a jdm gsr is $1500 and at most $500 to install. if the car is mint besides the motor you might get 2500, most people will never give over 1500-2000 tops if the engine is blown though. also, the b16 is considered by many to be worthless in an integra, as in it's worth the same in the condition you have it as it would be with no motor
