Default Starter going bad?

a couple of weeks ago my car died at work so i though it was the battery so i replaced that. 2 week later which is last night i tried to start the car it wouldnt start again i was like DAMN the battery again?!?!?! so i called my friend come jump me up again. and it would start up fine. once i drove home. i turn my car off see does it start up again it wouldnt. so i give my friend a call again he said tried hitting the starter see does it start up and it did. what i dont understand if if the start is going bad why would it start up when when the car is getting jump. Now everytime when my car doesnt start i just start hammer on the hammer and the car would start up. so what the problem is it the start? but why would it start up if i jump the car?

It may be your battery. Your battery should test above 12v when your car is off as well as on. Check a hanes or chilton manual. Your alternator recharges your battery while your car is running. If your battery acid is old it will not receive good charge from the alternator. If you have allready bought a battery from auto zone they will replace it for free if within 2 years, otherwise they will charge 20 something bucks(bring the orginal battery to the store). Also make sure you do not have any corrosion leading from your battery + to starter cable along with your + to engine bay fuse box. You may also check to see if your starter is recieving proper voltage with a voltmeter. Starters also tend to wear, you may need a new one.

IIRC it should be around 12V with the engine off and 13-14V running. If his starter works fine with a jump, my money is on the battery being bad.

you might want to check your alternator...since your battery is goin dead, therefore your alternator is not charging your battery.

Not necessarily. If it stays running than the alternator is likely fine, sounds like the battery won't hold enough of a charge. Batteries don't last forever. auto-zone does free tests.

I had the exact same problem. Car wouldn't start got a jump and it started. Headlights were bright so I knew I didn't have a bad battery. I just thought a little low. long story short. I replaced the 12v wire from battery to starter and added a ground wire also. No problems since.

If it works when you hit the starter, it's probably the starter. Try cleaning terminals and seeing if that helps, but I'll bet it's the starter.
