I currently have a b16a2 swap the previous owner put on and he used a JDM P73 ECU since my car is a 96 EX which is OBD2A.

Now everything is running fine but my vtec engages at 6k instead of 5500rpms. I was thinking of buying a vtec controller to lower my vtec atleast down to 5500 and see how it does maybe at 5200rpm.

What do you all think about the Apexi VAFC controller? My friend has one he is gonna give me, it isnt he newest one. Its the black one.

 

i think it your speedo cluster it a little off by 500 rpm.i think chip it with good tuneis better

 

you should get the correct ecu. timing, fuel aren't going to be right with what your doing

afc isn't a tool i recommend trusting. it tricks the map sensor and so on. it's a hack.

you'd have best luck using a stock ecu (for your b16), but if you only want it for that reason remember this, when you use the afc and lower vtec to like say 5500 or 5400 the power drops off right before or during that setting. everything needs to be adjusted for a smooth transition but even then it's a hack tool. don't adjust it too low either the oil pump needs rpms to generate oil pressure that is very important to the head of your motor.

Atleast you were intending on using it to get it closer to stock, but i also believe your cluster is a bit off, which is not uncommon at all. I've seen them off by over 3000rpm. (<~~not a typo.)

If he is willing to give it to you, take it. a few years ago i got one for free in a weird deal and i wired it up (used to use it to lower VTEC engagement point until i learned through research and others on h-t.) After i learned that this was actually WORSE, i rewired it so it didn't not mess with any tuning but was basically a cool looking digital gauge.

 

I think im just gonna buy a chipped p28 and a obd2a > obd1 harness.

 

Get the right ECU for your swap, I dunno which one you need..

As someone else said, AEM vtec controller is a hack, it's not the way it should be. It's a little fcukup, otherwise known as a loophole, so it's not really going to fix your problem. Like a bandaid on a severed limb, it's not the right solution for the size of your problem...

 

been using the vafc with hondata for years, the vafc is good for dropping vtec and having a gauge to watch engine vitals, however i never recomend using a vafc for tuning, always go with a reputable company for a tune.

i recomend converting to obd1 and getting a good tune, if your engine is anything like the last z6 i did it ran so rich off the stock ecu that using a vafc and dropping vtec engagement wont hurt the motor.

however never, ever try to tune a vafc yourself, and never use it as a substitute for a good tune.
