Default Hi, and a project question.

Howdy Forum, I'm new and have a little project that I need some help with.

I'm an engineering student with a '93 Civic Coupe 1.6L without ABS, and the front driver side brake has started a little metallic grinding sound during braking. I have a service manual for a '94 civic so working on the car shouldn't be difficult. What I'm looking to determine to find out is how long it might take to replace the front brakes on both sides, and if I might need to replace the pads and/or the disks.

I love my car and once I graduate in May I'm hoping to do some serious work on it. It has 223K miles on it and it needs a new engine and suspension but those will have to wait. I'm hoping with a brake replacement it will last till then.

Any input will be appreciated.

223 k on a hopnda engine is almost new anyway lol

these engines can go til 800k.

u dont need a new engine because ur milage is high.

as for your breaks its just the metal slider hitting ur rotor letting u know your brake pads r almost done, it is time to replace your pads.

if your rotors rnt grooved or beat up u can reuse these and just change the pads.

but rule of thumb would say if u change pads, change therotors, it isnt expensive.

and the repair is easy.

jack the car up on that side.
take off tire (4 lugs)
two ten mm bolts hold caliper in place and 2 more hold the bracket in place, take out the 4 which the service manual will show u then it slides off.

if ur piston comes out put it back in with clamps or turn it whichever one ur working on it varries.

slip old pads out , new ones in, put ur **** back together.
ride on

for a newbie an hour tops

A diy brake job takes about 20 minutes for each rotor.

Great, thanks guys. Just gotta get parts then and my day off. For my engine it's burning oil about a quart every 500 miles so its gotta go someday. I'm thinking a small block V8, but we'll see.

all engines burn oil.

if your burning alot, u need to change your head gasket, not hard with a new gasket some simple tools and your time.

thing is with hondas bro, their not muscle cars, getting a v8 engine in here is almost unheard of.

firmiliarize yourself with honda engines and spend a little bit of money and ur car is golden man.

burning oil is caused by worn piston rings and valve guides, burning coolant is associated with hedgasket

Done with the swap, took about 3 hours. Getting the piston to move sucked till I found a C-clamp, worked like a dream.

The engine is gonna wait for a least a year till I graduate and get a second car when this one will become my project. I'm planning on rebuilding most of the engine, boring the cylinders, new head gasket, new exhaust manifold, stuff like that.

The V8 is gonna go where the back seat sits now with the tranny more or less in the trunk attached to the rear tires. It's gonna be awesome pulling up to a red light, disengaging the four-banger and starting the V8 as the corvette next to me gets this confused look on his face as I tear outta there. sigh, can't wait.

Good luck with that lol. I've seen some crazy swaps in my day, including a rear engine integra, a 4WD delsol, an F20C into a 67 S800, and a V8 CRX. If you pull off a 4/8 dual engine Civic I'll eat my hat.
